Clearing Things Up
Written by Dan September 3rd, 2008Bouman? Harrington? Simms? Bramlet? In the last five days, the Ravens have been trying out and trying to sign a handful of veteran quarterbacks in the hopes of adding depth to the teams, but despite published reports pointing fingers every different direction, the latest reports are saying that the team still has not signed any of the newbies…
But that doesn’t mean I’m scared to say something…
Let’s get one thing straight here people: Joe Flacco is this team’s starting quarterback. And barring an injury, he is going to stay the starter until Troy Smith (or perhaps Kyle Boller) is ready to relieve him in some manner. But even that is not a given.
Either way, Bouman, Harrington, Simms, Bramlet… the winning pick is coming in as a stop-gap for this team. Smith and Boller are both going to be unavailable on Sunday - perhaps for several Sundays - and this team needs someone in uniform on the sideline should anything happen to Joltin’ Joe. Sorry, but Mark Clayton is not a viable option as our second stringer, at least not this year.
So, without further ado, I am ready to file this entire saga under the category of “Non-issue.” Does it matter if we get Bouman’s 10 years of mixed back-up play or Harrington’s 5 years of sub-par starts? Not particularly, because the hope is that neither will have to even step on the field in the games to come. Really, this decision comes down to getting the best deal for the team’s money.
And if, by some strange twist of fate, John Harbaugh decides that any of the lackluster fellas they are auditioning does deserve some time under center ahead of Flacco… well, we can debate how long it will take Bisciotti to fire him when the time comes.
