If you love quarterback controversy, the Ravens continue to be the team to follow. Over the holiday weekend, the Ravens made news time and time again with quarterback chat.

First came the news that Casey Bramlet, the recent addition and former San Diego Chargers back-up, had been relegated to the team’s practice squad. Bramlet played more than half of Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons with mixed results. There was buzz throughout the stadium about Bramlet as many fans were unaware he had even joined the team. His play failed to excite, though, throwing two interceptions and failing to lead the Ravens to the endzone.  The team announced Bramlet had been waived on Saturday, and then announced he had been placed on the practice squad Sunday.

Following the Bramlet experiment, most fans were left with the feeling that the team would be entering the season carrying the expected trio of Joe Flacco, Kyle Boller and Troy Smith, despite the fact that both Boller and Smith have been unable to play for more than a week and a half due to injuries and illness. The biggest question remaining was who would start the season-opener this coming Sunday against the Bengals.

Harbaugh finally let that news out over the weekend as well: Joe Flacco, the rookie and first round draft pick out of Delaware, will start - at least for one game. Harbaugh insisted that it was near-impossible to imagine either Boller or Smith taking the field without having played or practiced in more than a week.

And so it was settled… Flacco to start!

But wait… there’s more. Beginning Monday afternoon, there were reports of the Ravens signing yet another quarterback last minute to fill the void. The team brought in a trio of recently waived veterans to workout - Chris Sims, Joey Harrington, and Todd Bouman. As of this morning, there is still no official word, but reports are that the team is trying to sign Joey Harrington to serve as a back-up.

And so where are we left?

Joe Flacco - starting week one, but no promises beyond that.

Troy Smith - still sick and probably hoping to return and start, but likely out for week one.

Kyle Boller - avoiding surgery, but still not expected to play for several weeks.

Joey Harrington - if signed, is likely to be the back-up on Sunday and then move to the 3-spot when Smith is healthy.

Casey Bramlet - practice boy… unless of course, perhaps, they can’t sign Harrington, maybe.
