State of the Ravens
Written by Dan January 29th, 2008It’s been nearly a month since this team finished the most disappointing seasons in club history. In that time, we’ve seen plenty of change and plenty of talk about more change to come. So in these days of silence and uncertainty, I present to you the three most pressing issues facing the Ravens as they move into the off-season and truly move towards a more successful 2008…
3. Deciding on a Quarterback Path: It’s the most obvious and most written-about story regarding this franchise. It has been for the last, well, eleven years. It doesn’t even matter what Harbaugh and his staff decide - Boller, Smith, McNair, a free agent, a no name, a rookie - so long as they make a move and stick with it. This team needs some consistency, not just from the players in the position, but from the coaches in supporting those players. Set a path for how the quarterback issue will be handled, not just for this season, and stick to it.
2. Solving the Salary Cap Issue: It’s an understatement to say that the Ravens have a few holes to fill in the coming months. Quarterback and cornerback are the two favorite positions to point to, but this team still needs help in other areas - depth at linebacker, on the offensive line, and consistency from the receivers. And given their current salary cap situation, the Ravens hardly have room to sign their draft picks.
1. The Development of John Harbaugh: It’s one thing to say all the right things in an interview room and in front of the cameras. We’re all still honeymooning with Harbaugh - he’s easy to like and brings great energy to a franchise and city that are in need of a solid shock. But how will all of this transition over the coming months, in the lockerroom, in training camp, and with players one-on-one. Ask anyone that’s ever coached or taught at any level; they’ll tell you how hard the transition from ‘ideas’ to ‘action’ can be. And while I trust Harbaugh and all of our players, reigning in this team will still be a challenge. It’s up to Harbaugh to establish himself firmly in the coming months.
