Rex Ryan Wants to Stay in Baltimore
Written by Danielle January 25th, 2008The Baltimore Sun’s Jamison Hensley reports that Rex Ryan has hopes of staying on with the Ravens as the team’s defensive coordinator. Hensley also reports that Ryan denied rumors that he has spoken to other teams about vacant defensive coordinator positions. If Ryan really does want to stay, where does this leave newly hired head coach John Harbaugh? Between a rock and a hard place, quite frankly.
The arrival of Harbaugh signaled a change of gigantic proportions for the Ravens; fresh blood and a new attitude. New winds were sweeping into Baltimore. Retaining Ryan, a member the Ravens’ old regime, could have locker room implications, creating the possibility of a divided team. Although many fans seem to be in complete denial that there wasn’t any locker room tension (even though the defense, through the years, became more vocal about their displeasure about the burden of carrying an inept offense), the writing has been on the wall that there was tension.
The Ravens have already stated that they’d like to keep Ryan aboard, so it could be assumed that with both parties in agreement, Ryan will stay. But, that might not necessarily be what is best for the future of the Ravens. If a new wind is blowing in Baltimore, it should sweep out all of the old.
